Southern Area Group of Astronomical Societies (SAGAS)

The Southern Area Group of Astronomical Societies is an informal grouping of local societies covering the counties of Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon and the Isle of Wight. The group first met on 15th September 1973 and has been meeting regularly ever since! There is no 'membership' as such, officers and members of individual societies attend meetings as they wish, although the cost of hiring the meeting hall is split between those societies present (usually £2 - £3 per society). Normally, the chairing society arranges one or more speakers to give a presentation as a supplement at the meeting, then the £2 - £3 per society may increase slightly to cover the cost accordingly.

Of the three meetings a year, the February and October ones are 'discussion' meetings followed by a lecture or slide show. These are held at the South Downs Planetarium at Chichester. The 'main' summer meeting is now hosted in rotation by one of the societies in the south, who arranges a 'special' event. These have been very successful so far, with Vectis AS hosting one at their observatory on the Isle of Wight, followed by Croydon AS at their observatory and East Sussex at the old Royal Observatory at Herstmonceux. These main events consist of a day of lectures with trade stands and evening entertainment. These meetings also give astronomers the opportunity to look around the assets of other societies.
